“Medical play has become one of the most popular activities for patients to engage in during their appointments and infusions at our outpatient hematology/oncology clinic. Patients with diagnoses such as leukemia, Pompe disease, and metabolic disorders benefit greatly from being able to rehearse, process, and debrief the many medical procedures and experiences that they undergo throughout their course of treatment. Through medical play, these patients augment their understanding of their diagnoses, express thoughts and emotions, and build resiliency that will help them throughout their course of treatment and beyond.”

“I work in the NICU as a Child Life Specialist and often times support siblings at home learn about the medical equipment they see on their new baby brothers and sisters. As you can imagine, seeing their new sibling with all the wires and medical equipment can be overwhelming. I try and provide them with dolls with similar equipment to allow them to play with them and learn about the equipment. Allowing children to learn through play empowers them to cope within normal limits and bond with their new sibling. Having access to these items is often challenging.
